Rob has been making wine in McLaren Vale for in excess of 45 years, as well as gaining vintage experience in Germany.
Commencing his winemaking as Senior Red Winemaker for Thomas Hardy Wines based in McLaren Vale, where he was responsible for all red wine and fortified wine production for Hardy Wines and their sister Company Chateau Reynella.
12 years later, Rob created his own company Beresford Wines, which ultimately included a second brand Step Rd. He sold his shareholding in these Companies after a highly successful 23 years, building it to become within the top 35 largest Companies in the Australian Wine Industry.
In 2010 he purchased Cape Barren Wines to maintain a passionate bond with the McLaren Vale region, and particularly with the ancient sandy soils of Blewitt Springs, and some of the oldest Shiraz and Grenache vines found anywhere in the World.
Throughout all his time in McLaren Vale, Rob has involved himself closely with vineyard management, and has selected some of the absolute best vineyards in the Blewitt Springs region for his fine wines.
Here, some of the oldest vines in the world exist as they have escaped the ravages of Phylloxera. Graceful and ranging in age from around 60 years old to over 105 years, their roots have delved deep into the sandy soils to provide added nutrients to the already flavoursome fruit.
These deep sandy soils in excess of 500 million years old, are important in providing the spice tones to balance the natural chocolate characters, resulting in truly world-class wines.
This undoubtedly unique combination of ancient soils, very old vines and a wealth of experience that only time can create is unparalleled. Time and patience is the essence of classic wines.
